New iPhone App – Navigating the AMNH

Brilliant!

The AMNH has released the American Museum of Natural History Explorer for the iPhone.  It will function as an indoor GPS allowing users to find their way through the expansive halls and rooms.  It features customizable tours, a fossil treasure hunt and other social media links.  The comprehensive app allows for real-time navigation and custom tours through 45 exhibition halls across 25 interconnected buildings within  four city blocks.  It offers turn-by-turn directions and don’t worry, the museum has Wifi available for its visitors so the iPod Touch will work as well.

The official launch was July 29th. See below for an example of the capabilities.

Go on a museum tour, find exhibits, or if you’re hungry – no problem it will guide you to the nearest food court.  The application is quite expansive with all animals on exhibit.  It has customizable tours that you configure based on the exhibits you want to see (and will get you through them in the most time efficient way) or choose from four tours including the Dino Tour, Highlights Tour, Night at the Museum and the Earth and Space Tour.  Then as a bonus there is even a Fossil Treasure Hunt where you seek the pictures on the screen.

This follows their previous launch of Dinosaurs: American Museum of Natural History Collections iPhone app earlier in the year. Exerpt below:
